"In Bloom" - September 2023

Image
"In Bloom".  September 2023.  Dried rose petals and graphite on paper.  Matted and framed. This was the first piece that I created using dried rose petals.  It came together quickly.  I draw a spiral in graphite with a light touch.  Then I hot glue dried leaves and petals beginning on the outside and working my way toward the center.  In this piece I add a little bit of contrasting yellow around the center.   I love to work with dried flowers.  I often have fresh flowers around the house and rather than just throwing them away I try to repurpose them in sculpture.  These pieces are incredibly delicate.

"In Autumn" - October 2023

Image
"In Autumn".  October 2023.  18 x 24 in.  Watercolor and graphite on paper.  Framed and matted. Inspired by the changing seasons, this painting incorporates colors associated with fall/autumn.  Red, orange, yellow, brown and a little bit of green remind the viewer of the transition that leaves typically experience during this time of year (depending on where you live).

"In Shape" - November 2023

Image
"In Shape".  November 2023.  18 x 24 in.  Magazine images and graphite on paper. Awhile ago I injured my foot by overtraining.  I came across a suggestion to make a collage out of inspirational images to promote healing so I purchased a subscription to Runner's World.  There are surprisingly few images of people running in that magazine.  After collecting a few issues I was able to gather enough pictures to create this artwork around Thanksgiving.

"In Trouble" - December 2023

Image
"In Trouble".  December 2023.  Dried rose petals, leaves and graphite on paper.  Matted and framed.   During the time period when I created this piece, I contemplated the idea of being "in trouble" which I generally try to avoid.  You may have observed that all the pieces in this series begin with the preposition 'in'.  I want to draw attention to the symbolic nature of language and the expressions that we take for granted.  My intention is to push the viewer into considering word combinations from a fresh perspective by relating them to unexpected art compositions.   The series is called "In Spirals".  This title  references the prism spiral watercolor works and the spiral rose petal designs.  Circular mobiles echo this radial design as well.  While developing this series I came across the work of literature Spiral Dance by Starhawk.

"In Mourning" - November 2023

Image
"In mourning".  November 2023.  Watercolor and pencil on paper.  18 x 24 in.  Matted and framed.   This piece I made around the time my grandmother passed away.  I love the color combination.  There is darkness mixed with beauty and creativity.  Pink, purple, turquoise and peach swirl together with black.  I included patches of silver if your eye catches the light properly.

"In Spirals #1" - December 2023

Image
"In Spirals #1".  December 2023.  Watercolor on watercolor paper.  8 x 10 in.  Unframed.   This piece is an example of a smaller spiral prism.  It doesn't have a particular theme so it is called "In Spirals #1" which comes from the name of the show.   I create the underlying composition freehand but it is very similar to what happens when you use a Spirograph which I did as a child.  The loops start out small then spiral to become larger until the page is nearly full.  Radial movement suggests a kaleidoscope snapshot.   The interior of the prism contains small sections of color while the outside contains large sections.  While sometimes I apply the watercolor uniformly I also allow it to behave playfully and encourage surprises throughout the paint application since the overall composition is so flat.   Every window pane contains a universe...

"In Shade" - January 2024

Image
"In Shade".  January 2024. 18 x 24 in.  Watercolor on mixed media paper.  Matted and framed. The color palette for this piece incorporates black in experimental ways.  It reminds the viewer of an afternoon in the backyard, the light shifting through the shady trees over the course of the day.  Overall I find it cheeky and pleasant.

"In Heat" - January 2024

Image
"In Heat" 18 x 24 in.  Dried rose petals and leaves on multimedia paper.  Framed. This was the first floral artwork that I created in yellow.  I wanted to draw attention to the warm colors with the title "In Heat" which also means to be ready to mate.  In a broader sense it conveys a sense of eagerness for whatever comes next!

"In Pain" - February 2024

Image
"In Pain".  February 2024.  18 x 24 in.  Watercolor on mixed media paper.  Matted and framed.  The most recent installment in my series "In Spirals".  This one is about being in pain whether that is mental, physical or emotional.  Even from darkness there can be beauty.  I'm working on meditation where I sit with the pain without judgement and attempt to listen to it more carefully.
