Summer Abstract 1

Image
Summer Abstract 1.  8" x 10". Acrylic on canvas.  2020. I did a few abstract paintings using this summer color scheme and a palette knife on a grey background. This one is probably the most successful, relying heavily on radial symmetry to create a sense of cohesion.  It reminds me of a fireworks explosion or a complicated chakra.    Here are a few close-ups where you can see the texture and color combinations more clearly: These are similar designs that I made a couple of years ago with Sharpies on ceramic plates: Some other works in progress: I'm pretty clearly into flora lately: Lemon balm: Lavender:

#JUSTICE

#JUSTICE.  10" x 14".  Mixed media on canvas.  2020. This piece is a direct response to the death of George Floyd and the growing momentum within the US to end the frequent murders of people of color by the police.  I struggled as an artist to think of a way to respond without being too overt.  I've heard that the arc of the universe bends toward Justice so perhaps that is what we are witnessing.  The hashtag asserts the piece in the digital age.   I created this background using spray paint over the things they give you at Specs to protect your wine bottles.   Some lovely photos of Emancipation Park:

This collage speaks to me of the beach because of the persistent glare and reflections from the sun, the playful blue sky, water, ocean and clouds that roll around all day, and the various towels, blankets, sails and bathing suits all wobble together in a precarious harmony.  This abstract landscape flattens out to give a sense of the passage of time.  I wanted to make something playful, fun and full of surprises. These are some...
