Surrealism Project

Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch.
For my Surrealist project, I decided to create a triptych inspired by the work pictured above by Dutch Renaissance master Bosch.  It consists of three panels which depict Heaven, Earth and Hell, moving from left to right.  The piece portrays a cautionary tale against lust and overindulgence, beginning with Original Sin in the Garden of Eden.  On "Earth", humans mate with bird creatures and eat fruit insatiably.  The painting finally warns of a "Hell" where inanimate objects fuse with animate to create a nightmarish landscape.

Completed version of collage inspired by Hieronymous Bosch.
By this point in the painting class I was dying to incorporate some collage so luckily my teacher said it was alright.  I created the landscape under paintings using a variety of techniques before generating activity with figures cut out from a wide range of sources.  My version warns more about global warming, radioactivity, melting ice caps and the societal tendency to worship romance over a true relationship with God.
