Homemade Candles

Image
Several examples of a finished product.  The pens/pencils hold the wick in place while the wax cools. I bought these wicks on Amazon for about 6 bucks. All my old candles ready to be melted and layered. Melting the wax in a pot of boiling water. Works just like a candle! Project in action. Tools for scooping debris out of melted wax. Ruler for scraping up the dried wax on the counter. Layers of smells!

Landscape Project

Image
For my landscape project, I chose to create a piece in the style of Monet.  I wanted it to be very colorful and impressionistic, filled with light. Finished version.  I should probably add more detail in the foreground. Original photograph. Filling in color using a quick, loose style. Basic under painting.

Abstract Project

Image
Ever since I saw this show by Roberto Juarez at the Boulder MOCA , I wanted to enlarge a collage by creating a painted reproduction of it.  Here is what I ended up with: Painting and collage adjacent for scale purposes. Large version (30" x 40"). Small collage: 8" x 10". Before stretching on the canvas. Early stages.

Surrealism Project

Image
Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch. For my Surrealist project, I decided to create a triptych inspired by the work pictured above by Dutch Renaissance master Bosch.  It consists of three panels which depict Heaven, Earth and Hell, moving from left to right.  The piece portrays a cautionary tale against lust and overindulgence, beginning with Original Sin in the Garden of Eden.  On "Earth", humans mate with bird creatures and eat fruit insatiably.  The painting finally warns of a "Hell" where inanimate objects fuse with animate to create a nightmarish landscape.    Completed version of collage inspired by Hieronymous Bosch. By this point in the painting class I was dying to incorporate some collage so luckily my teacher said it was alright.  I created the landscape under paintings using a variety of techniques before generating activity with figures cut out from a wide range of sources.  My version warns more about global wa...

Self-Portrait (Final)

Image
Final version of self-portrait. Here is my interpretation of a self-portrait in the style of Francoise Nielly.  The painting is more or less resolved, but fails to capture the sultriness of an original Nielly: Of course, Nielly is working with oil paint, has a broader range of tools (palette knives) and a great deal more practice than me.   Filling in the chest area. Another point I could have possibly stopped.
